What are Disinfectant-By-Products?
Disinfectant-by-products are oxidized compounds formed when naturally occuring organic matter
in water is combined with clorine or other oxidizers.
What are these compounds called?
Trihalomethanes (THM's), HAA's (HA5), aldehydes.
Why should we be concerned about these compounds?
Public health associations have identified these compounds as carcinogenic agents.
EPA enforces maximum contamination levels (MCL) allowable in public drinking water.
What has changed regarding these limits?
Effective January 2008, EPA is reducing the MCL on DBP's. Average will no longer be allowed to evaluate a system.
How can municipalities control DBP's?
EarthTec, a completely dissolved liquid copper algicide/bactericide which is registered with
the Federal EPA and certified to NSF Standard 60, reduces DBP precursors (organics)
before they combine with oxidizers.
What is the health benifit of using EarthTec?
All oxidizers react to organics the same way, that is to lyse (destroy) the cell which releases internal fluids.
EarthTec is not an oxidizer but rather a reducer (shuts down the RNA)
Which does not lyse the cell and creats no DBP's.
How is EarthTec aplied in a Water System?
The most common method is injection at the water source using a chemical metering pump. EarthTec
representatives can evaluate individual systems to determine the most effective and economical method of application.
