What are the effects of algae on municipal water sources?
Algae are primitive microscopic plants that live in fresh water. Their scientific name is cyanobacteria.
Although many forms of algae are relatively harmless, some forms produce toxins which can be harmful to
human health. One of those toxins is Trihalomethanes.
Trihalomethanes (THM) are a group of four chemicals that are formed along with other disinfection
by products when chlorine or other disinfectants used to control microbial contaminants in drinking
water react with naturally occurring organic and inorganic matter in water.
What will cause a bad odor and taste from algae in drinking water?
Geosmin is produced by several classes of microbes, including cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), and
released when these microbes die. Communities whose water supply depends on surface water can
periodically experience episodes of unpleasant-tasting water when a sharp drop in the population
of these bacteria releases geosmin into the local water supply.
